Yesterday was my son's Birthday. I remember the moments before he was born. Before he came into this world of mine and changed it completely.. in so many ways and all for the better.

He loves books. He expects me to bring him new books when he sees me after school and after my work. He demands it. When I forget, he throws a fit! He loves books so much that he wants to go inside them. He shows us by putting his foot on top of the book and waiting to get inside the story, waiting for him to be put into that wonderful world of imagination!

The other day he told me something wonderful. I am in awe of what he tells me. In awe of his words, his conversations, his world as he sees it.

He told me "Leo hold my hand." We were talking about touch and how we don't touch strangers because we don't know them. We had just seen a guy on a motorcycle drive past us and he was saying he wanted to touch him and I said "No we don't touch strangers. We don't know him."

And then that is when he said "Leo hold my hand." And I asked him if Leo was his friend and he said "Yes." And I said "Do you hold Leo's hand?" And he said yes. I thought it was so wonderful that he shared this with me.

He changes my world, everyday, he changes my view of life, because I see things how I was raised, and how I grew up and now him coming along, he changes me.

For the better.

And I think it's fitting that my husband told me yesterday "And Happy Birthday to you too! Because it was also your birthday!" And yes, he's right. I was born all over again!

NO! Doctor HURT!

Last week was an emotional week for my husband and I. My son had been having mucus dripping from his nose for a long time - and when I say a long time - I mean a month at least. He had a sinus infection and was put on antibiotics about a month ago and the infection never seemed to go away. It may have lessened but it never cleared up completely. And you would think that as parents - we would have instincly known that somethings up. Something is wrong with this child who seems to have green mucus always coming out of his nose. But no, we just thought - Oh we live in a city with a percentage of high allergies in the air and we just blamed those damn allergies! And so finally, I felt so bad for my son, who always needed his nose swiped and was always stuffy, most especially at night. And I finally had my husband take him to see his pediatrician. Who said - he has something in his nose. He has something INSIDE his nose. She thought it might be a piece of paper - like tissue paper and she tried to pull it out but since she didn't have the tools for that, she couldn't. They made him an appointment at the Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor for the next morning.
I was horrified when I found out. Completely horrified. I thought - WHAT KIND OF A MOTHER AM I? How could I not know this?! How could I not know that there is something inside his nose causing him to have green mucus for a month!

So all night, we slept, or rather didn't sleep, thinking about what horrible parents we are. My husband blamed himself thinking he was at fault. And I of course, blamed myself, then him.

The next morning I told my son that he was going to see the doctor and he said "NO! Doctor hurt!" And I felt so bad because it was my fault that the doctor hurt him. How was he going to deal with another doctor, who may or may not also hurt him? How was I going to deal with that myself??

So we just told him on the ride over there that the doctor was going to help him and fix his "yaya" and his nose would get better. All the while, my stomach kept churning and I felt horrible, I wanted to cry so bad for my little boy. My beautiful little boy.

The waiting was the worst part. We waited in the waiting room, and then they called our son's name and we waited for the doctor in a smaller private waiting room.
This took forever. It was the longest doctor we've ever had to wait for. And I've waited for doctors for a long time.

When he finally came in, he told us that he only had 1 chance to get in there and pull out whatever my son had stuck in his nose. If not, then he would have to put him under anesthesia. My heart stopped beating. I swear, I was just in so much pain and in so much torture. The doctor suggested that my son sit on my husband's lap and then he looked inside his nose but my son was moving around so much that he was getting upset. So I took my husband's place and we tried again. This time I held his hands, the nurse held his head, my husband held his feet and the doctor used his tools to pull out cotton ball pieces! 3 long stringy, bloody cotton ball pieces!
Of course I couldn't see this but my husband said "WHAT IS THAT?!" and I thought "What?! What is it?" I kept imagining tissue paper and no it was cotton ball pieces.

The doctor was really quite happy with us and with our son. He thought that all of it was taken out and he wanted to see us again in 3 weeks - more torture!?

We were all exhausted that day. Just re-telling it has exhausted me. And no, I cannot laugh about this, yet.

Today is my son's first day back in daycare. It's an adjustment for him and for us. I am feeling guilty and emotional.. wondering why this is so hard for me. I know there is no other choice - we don't have a caregiver who can take care of him and going back to daycare seems to be our only choice at this time.

Fortunately my husband said he did great when he dropped him off. He did not cry and he went straight to playing with toys.

I telephoned the daycare during midday and found that he cried the whole morning. This did not make me feel any better. I felt anxious all morning and sure enough, I knew that he was feeling the same way.

I know the next couple of days or weeks will be difficult. And I hope that he adjusts well.

Tempera paint, watercolor paints, crayons, colored pencils, glitter pens.. these are all the materials that my son has been using for his creativity. It amazes me that he has no set ways of doing things ~ and I think that this is the best thing because he is doing something artistic without being stifled into doing it a certain way. I watch him and I learn from him.

We attended the Riverwalk Expansion Grand Opening last weekend. Though we didn't get to see all of the art pieces that they have, we did get to see a couple. One of these art pieces is the fish art that hangs underneath one of the bridges.

They light up the fishes at night, so that would be a fun thing to go do one evening.

I guess it's just nature, but I didn't know that even cows would be so territorial! We were walking by and I noticed the cows next to us. One of them stopped walking and just stood there staring at us. My husband wanted to walk on the side street next to them and I was hesistant because of the way the cow was looking at us. Well sure enough when we walked closer the cow stamped its foot and stood still, staring.
So then my husband said yes lets walk away to the other side.

This is a closeup shot of a rose. One of our neighbors has roses in their yard and their little kid was selling some cut roses for 25 cents each. We bought some. They really are a beautiful color of red. A very vibrant red.

Delicioso! This is what I usually have when I go eat at Lupita's Mexican Restaurant on Culebra. The nice thing about eating at Lupita's is that you also get chips and salsa before your meal and with most dinner plates you also get tortillas.
One thing I have to say about the enchilada dinner in San Antonio that is different from El Paso, is the cheese. In El Paso, enchiladas are served with a white cheese not a yellow cheese. And another difference is that there is no meat gravy in El Paso Enchiladas. I don't get the meat gravy at all, it must be a tex-mex thing..

My favorite discovery for this program was creating and maintaining a blog. It's so easy and so much fun. Yes maybe all the stuff I blog about won't be of interest to anyone but myself but who cares! I can blog and do!
Another fave was the wiki. I like that I can play play play with the sandbox wiki. I like being able to post a favorite thing and adding it to the wiki.
And of course a fave is always flickr - flickr flickr flickr *bats eyelashes* I like taking pictures and I've just started to play around with images. I'm still playing around with the animoto one..

This program has assisted my lifelong learning goals by expanding my mind. Making me think and have fun at the same time. Making me want to learn more about technology and even though I'm hesistant at times to try and play around with technology - to know that I can't mess it up - well maybe not too much. :) And also making me realize that I love being a student - I love learning!

Hmm.. unexpected outcomes from this program? It was unexpected that I understood the answers to all this technological stuff when asking the DSA. But then again after a lot of questions - I would hope that I'd get it.. :)

I would definetly partipate if another program was offered in the future. I would also expect some cool prizes like tshirts from Unshelved, a gift card for Java Nook, a day pass to Sea World.. am I listing too big prizes? ;)

Thanks for creating this program and most importantly letting us play at work. :)

NPR rules! I love NPR and so I decided to select a podcast from NPR - and found a section on Authors and I tried to include the Cover to Cover podcast but it wouldn't take. I thought I was doing something wrong - but alas my coworker saved me again and explained that the podcast preferes itunes and yahoo accounts instead. So then I found the section Books and put Book Talk as a podcast into my GoogleReader account and it worked! Since it had Zunes then it would be able to go into my Googlereader account :) Yipee! This is really good to have - that way I can be updated on what's going on in the book world.
This is so lovely - everything organized into my googlereader account. Which is really good because it seems that I have a lot of stuff I like to look at.. :)

I used to use netlibrary alot when I was a grad student. I would view ebooks for research and found netlibrary to be such an invaluable media. I thought that I still had an account but since I've changed emails, my old account is lost somewhere in cyberspace. So I started from the beginning creating an account and found a book that I've been meaning to read, but haven't had the chance.. The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I had two options on downloading - either downloading to radio or CD quality. I downloaded to the CD quality because I was downloading to a flash drive. I was doing this from a staff computer since I don't have internet at home. (We've had to tighten up financially since we have a little one..) I figure that I'll listen to it at home and hopefully the quality is still good. The estimated time to download is 8 minutes, but it seemed longer as I anxiously waited for it.. anyway I'll be listening to this book at home. I've heard good reviews on it and wondering what I'll think of the quality of the downloaded version.

When I went into Overdrive, I had to view the ebooks because I was viewing from a staff computer. I put a book on hold and hopefully I will get to check it out soon so I can post my results.

Thing #20 was kind of hard for me cause' I tried to copy and paste but it just wouldn't work. Luckily my coworker who is so familiar with technology helped me post this. :) My coworker showed me what I did wrong - I was cutting and pasting the link for email instead of the embed. Now I can add more youtube videos to my blog!

Actually when I first found out about youtube I was so adamant on not watching youtube. I just thought that everything that was posted was ridiculous and didn't warrant my attention. But I've learned. Sure there is stuff on there that I wouldn't even watch at all, but other things I would. So I'm the controller.

Having youtube videos on educating the public on how tos would be really beneficial for library customers, examples: How to go online and do an ILL, how to search a database, how to attach a document to email..

I just adore George Lopez and so I had to post this Youtube video of him. Esta chin***! I was so upset when the George Lopez show got cancelled. I don't know why ABC did that, but they made a huge mistake.

I selected the Questions and Advice category and chose Minti, http://www.minti.com/, as the site to explore. Since I'm a new parent I like to find sites that give good advice on parenting, have Q and A's, and also allow you to connect with other parents in similar situations. One site I check out regularly is www.babycenter.com. It's wonderful - I've used it since I was pregnant - I would get frequent emails from them saying how my baby was developing at each week.. I still get them.
Going back to Minti, ah, that reminds me of the commercial for mentos...
Anyway, going back again to Minty, I started noticing the layout of the homepage - how it's different than babycenter. They do have a section labeled tag cloud which was nice because I explored the tags breastfeeding and teething. So although I still prefer babycenter, I can see myself using minty again.

I created a Bday invite for my Google Document. Fun, fun, fun! This is a good thing to know about - because you can create invitations through templates or create your own. I used a template and it was so easy to manipulate that I'll have to go back and edit and print up my invites.. I didn't know about Google Docs before. I know Google has a lot of stuff that is easily acccessible but who has the time? But since this is on the 23 things I'm able to go and explore!

I can imagine using this at work - being able to go and create a document and share it with coworkers is a good thing. Let's say you need to share your knowledge with coworkers - you simply could create a Google Doc Presentation and share it with them by letting them view it online.. especially if time is a factor and there is no way you can all gather together.

I went into Book Lovers Wiki, http://booklovers.pbwiki.com/Princeton+Public+Library, since I'm an avid book lover. I quickly found out on the main page that this wiki is no longer active but is left as an archive page. So that in itself is disappointing.

The Contemporary Fiction section caught my attention and I wanted to read the reviews interesting, but I really didn't see anything that spiked my attention. I think it's because a lot of the books I've already read and since it's no longer an active site - then really they're not very contemporary..

So then I went into Librarianchicks Wiki Collection, http://librarianchick.pbwiki.com/, and thankfully found that this is an active wiki. Yay! :)

The great thing about this wiki is that Library Chick provides links to free resources on the Internet. So I scrolled down the list of subjects and quickly clicked on Foreign Language. Wow! This is really handy - Library Chick provides a great list of internet links that provide free foreign language tutorials - either video, dictonary, online communities, etc. This is a good resource for our library community because we have a lot of ESL learners and they need all the resources they can get. I linked onto FSI Language Courses.

For fun, I then went into the subject of Culture, Arts and Music. I found the Take Lessons link http://takelessons.com/ and clicked on it because one day I hope to take lessons in guitar. The great thing about this website is that you can search by type of lesson and zipcode.

I also found the link Craftpop, http://craftpop.com/. This is a great site for all of you crafty people and even people like me who aren't so crafty, but like crafts. I went to the Beauty and Bath link because I love bathing products - lotions, cremes, hair products. I found a simple lip moisturizer that can be made with honey and olive oil. Hmm.. I'll have to try it out and see if it works! Bye bye dry lips..

Sometimes I rethink my decision on being a Librarian, but it's times like this that makes me feel that I really am affecting my customers.. The storytime customer who gave this to me is a shy one. She always clings to her grandparents. They tell me that she always raves about storytime and I would never have guessed this, because she rarely participates in the songs/fingerplays.

One time she came in with her parents instead of her grandparents and she strutted in - confident and smiling. She showed her parents around and she participated in some of the songs. It's nice to know that I have made an impact.

Rollyo is fun and also quite handy. I like that you can create your own searchroll and you have the option of sharing it or keeping it private. I like the Quick Quotes Rollyo .. it's fun to search.. I also checked out the Celebrity Gossip Rollyo. I had to check out the one of Joaquin Phoenix - where the gossip was that he was retiring.. all gossip. I'm thankful that it's just gossip! He's one of my favorite actors.

I created a searchroll on nursing moms since I'm a nursing mom. So if you are wanting to look up info on breastfeeding then this is the searchtool for you! :)

Del.icio.ous seems to be a useful tool - I like that you can bookmark the webpages that you need and then you can view what you're friends/coworkers/other people are bookmarking as well. It seems that everything that we do - or at least a lot of web features are sociable elements. It's funny to think that - because at first glance it seems that using the internet is just a one person searching the web thing - but just by using the web you're being a sociable creature - email, flickr, myspace, facebook, and now other things like rollyo, delicious, etc.. so even though in your personal space you are not around people - but in your webspace you are.

Away From the Icebergs - Reliance on User Education - I agree that libraries need to eliminate the barriers that come between customers and the information that they are seeking. People get frustrated with learning technology and they get even more frustrated when they want some kind of information right now, right now! Many times they are not going to listen, if you go through the steps of explaining how to find that research, what information is relevant, and so forth. So if there is a way to make information accessible with a one touch button or at least easier steps for the customer, then we'll have happier customers.

Into a New World of Librarianship - Librarians embrace 2.0 - this is so true. Librarians need to embrace technology and adapt to meeting customers through the webworld like the article suggests - through instant messaging, weblogs, creating myspace profiles.. If we are net savvy - then we can provide good customer assistance to internet users. If we have all the necessary tools to reach out to these customers - the ones who don't come into the library, but rather search online, then we have an outlet for reaching to them. But, like the article suggests, librarians don't seek out technology just for the sake of being cool, we seek out technology, to enhance our customer service.
But then this goes into the aspect that libraries need to provide training for staff to learn these new technologies.

This past Sunday my family and I got to visit the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. We wanted to see the treehouses that were being displayed at the gardens because it was the last day of the exhibit.

This was the second time that we had visited the gardens, and we always have such a wonderful time there! It's so relaxing to stroll around and enjoy the plants! I've had a goodreads account for awhile now. I love Goodreads! You can find it at http://www.goodreads.com/ and it is free to join! Anyone who is a book lover should join because you can keep track of what you've read, post your rating, write a review, and you can also create a list of what you want to read! Plus, you get to see what all your friends are reading along with their ratings and reviews!

I couldn't figure out how to grab a widget but luckily I had a computer-techy coworker help me with this and he was able to post a book montage for me! I like the book montage better. Ya! So thanks to the Collegium of Shadows!!

I played with the generator and found a fun one to do. That's the text generator that I posted yesterday. You can find it at http://generatorblog.blogspot.com/ under William Words or you could just go to this site http://alethe.net/words/artificial/. I thought it would be difficult to do but I just pasted the code from the source onto a new posting and it was able to display. Though it's not exactly the same, it still works well.

Besides the text generator, I liked one of the Comic Strip ones from the generator blog, I made a little comic strip, but I wasn't able to copy and paste it. I also liked the Twitter Status and Mafia Name.

This was a fun exercise!

I think I'd use RSS but I'm not sure if it would be a regular thing. I'm still adjusting to RSS, I'm not very comfortable at this time with using it. I think if I keep playing with RSS and the more I play ~the more I'll learn.. and then I'll be comfortable.

The easiest finding feed was technorati. I guess because I tend to already search for topic-specific interests - then this was perfect for me. I searched with keyword Chicana and found some good results. I tried clicking on Feedster but everytime I tried I got the "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" which was frustrating.

I think 2.0 is awesome. I can see why people who love technology go all out happy and excited about this stuff. But then again I can also see how people question technology and are afraid of using it because it seems daunting.

The video is really interesting - I really liked how it showed how far along we've come from HTML to XML to having people who are not technology savvy being able to create a blog ~ someone like me! I also like how the video explains that 2.0 links people together and it is so true. Going back to loving flickr - I am always posting pictures on there and this is great because family and friends who are not here locally get to see all the updated pics of what's going on in my family's life - thus this is linking us together. Isn't technology wonderful?

I went into Library Journal's Technology Review and read Product Pipeline: iPhone, iPod Touch, Kindle by Christopher Harris. He points out the positives and negatives for librarians on these technological items. I can see how if you are a librarian for a bookmobile or a wi-fi campus, you would need a gadget to be able to connect to databases, library catalog, etc. So having something lightweight that has user-friendly connections is a must for these librarians. Though I haven't had the chance to use these gadgets myself, I would think that they are valuable to those who do.

I like RSS because it is really simple just like the title suggests that it is. It keeps everything in order - and when someone who is like me - who is supposed to be organized, being a librarian and all, is not organized, then an RSS is really helpful.

I will be able to use this at work when I am in a hurry - trying to keep up with the latest news in National Public Radio. So while I'm busy doing all the wonderful things that we do in libraries - I could look up my RSS really quick and get a glimpse of what's going on nationally or wherever I'd like to check up on.

I have a Flickr account and I followed along with the flickr instructions on how to post a picture to my blog. It was really easy. Easier than I expected. I think that's the neat thing about technology - it can be really easy or really hard. This step was very easy to do.

On another note, I love flickr. I love taking photos and posting them to my flickr account to share with family and friends.

7 and 1/2 lifelong learning

Blogging Discovery:
The easiest habit for me would be creating a goal. I have a lot of things in my life that I plan to do and thinking about the goal is an easy feat. I don't have to think too hard about that.

The hardest habit for me would be having confidence in myself. I question myself too much - even though I know that I shouldn't because I'm doing whatever it is - the goal - as it should be. But I have a tendency to question myself and so I need to work on having confidence in myself.
